This is LaughOnLine.

The Laugh Factory mobile web app designed to provide useful feedback to up-and-coming comedians and gives users easy access to fun, comedic content.

Concept

Laugh Factory is a comedy club with locations in Hollywood, Long Beach, San Manuel, Chicago, and Las Vegas. Its clubs have hosted an impressive list of well-known comedians as well as fresh new talent. Laugh Factory is also prominent online, with a comedy network on YouTube and video channels where users can browse and watch comedian videos based on particular styles of comedy.

The LaughOnLine App is a mobile optimized web app that engages users with interactive comedic content. The app provides comedy fans with easy access to fun, stand-up content and the opportunity to rate up-and-coming comedians. The launch of the LaughOnLine App showcases the “Fresh Faces” comedians who perform once a month at the Laugh Factory comedy club in Los Angeles.

LaughOnLine can be used to rate comedian performances and videos, and to enjoy new stand-up comedy videos and share them with friends. Laugh Factory club attendees will have the opportunity to rate a comedian that they saw based on overall performance and two other attributes, which will give them access to the app’s homepage to browse and watch new videos. Users who have not attended a Laugh Factory show can access the app online or through their Facebook, and can rate comedian video clips to unlock new content. Along with unlocking and rating videos, users can also create a favorites page by favoriting videos that interest them, so that they can return to the app and watch them later.

The overall goal of our app is to benefit our partner, Laugh Factory, by adding to their comedian database, while providing users with an entertaining, interactive experience. The LaughOnLine App is unique for a comedy club, and will add a new dimension to the stand-up comedy experience.

Technology

LaughOnLine is a mobile optimized web app built using PHP, jQuery mobile, and a MySQL database. The app’s front-facing design is based on the jQuery mobile framework to provide a smooth experience on handheld devices. jQuery mobile is a library of code that makes it easy to optimize a page’s mobile interface. It works well with PHP and provides a clean user experience.

The main functional elements of the app are written in PHP, a server-side scripting language designed for web development. PHP is widely used and has an active support community. The additional features that PHP brings to HTML make it a natural choice for a web app that is much more than a static web page.

The cornerstone of LaughOnLine’s data management is our implementation of a MySQL database. Comedian data is pulled from one table, video information from another, and user ratings and feedback is stored in still another. MySQL is a common database tool that integrates easily with PHP.

The overall goal of our app is to benefit our partner, Laugh Factory, by adding to their comedian database, while providing users with an entertaining, interactive experience. The LaughOnLine App is unique for a comedy club, and will add a new dimension to the stand-up comedy experience.

Goals

1. To give comedians useful feedback on their stand-up performances from people who attended the show or watched the video recording. Users will rate comedians on an overall performance scale and based on 2 attributes from Laugh IQ. The app will also help up-and-coming comedians build a broader fanbase and online presence.

2. To give app users access to Laugh Factory’s online content and comedian material in an easy and all encompassing technology. The app will:

  • Allow users to gain access to comedian's personal pages and explore more content that is offered online
  • Allow users to see a wide variety of comedians in one location rather than searching all over the web
  • Allow users to share and comment on online content in an easy interface

3. To add to the database at Laugh IQ and help them learn more about various demographics and their sense of humor. Because the app works through Facebook, we will have access to Open Graph technology which gathers information from app user’s profiles such as their age, gender, location, and interests.

4. To generate more of an online fanbase for Laugh Factory and make them more prominent in the comedy industry.
